Public Safety
At an early community meeting, one of Jubilee Park & Community Center’s founding board members asked who had been a victim of theft. Every hand was raised. It’s hard to overstate how significantly crime can negatively affect a community’s sense of togetherness, security, and trust. Once a neighborhood can return to a feeling of safety, a world of possibilities begins to open up: families begin to gather publicly and establish relationships, kids feel comfortable leaving the house and being active outside, after-school and summer programs can function, and community gardens can flourish.
While we are proud of the 37% reduction in crime since 1997 and the 60% reduction since 2007, public safety is not just a number. Our ongoing approach is to help create a feeling of safety and to establish open, respectful communication with local authorities.
Here are a few examples of this approach at work:
- Resource Center: After a nearly ten year history of cooperation with the Dallas Police Department, a community prosecutor, residents, business owners, and code enforcement personnel, a sub-station opened in 2010 across the street from Jubilee Park & Community Center.
- Surveillance Cameras: Working with the City of Dallas, community members, staff, and city officials identified several “high crime” locations throughout the neighborhood. Installed at these strategic locations in 2005, these video cameras have helped significantly reduce crime while increasing protection for residents and business owners.
- Regular Meetings: Jubilee Park & Community Center helps to facilitate meetings between local law enforcement and residents in the ongoing effort to build open and meaningful relationships between the two groups. Representatives from the Dallas Police Department host open meetings at the community center where residents can voice safety concerns, police officers perform block walks to gain information from community members, and Jubilee hosts bi-monthly anti-crime meetings of community members, volunteers, and authorities.
