The Jubilee Center offers after-school and summer academic enrichment programs for children and youth; tutoring and homework assistance for kindergarten, first- through sixth-graders, and teenagers; and outside recreational activities and free meals for children two nights a week.  Davids’ Place prepares children ages 3 to 5 to enter nearby O.M. Roberts and Fannie C. Harris Elementary Schools. The center has nine classrooms and 25 teachers, 15 of whom are bilingual, and many volunteers.  The Jubilee Project works with the Dallas Independent School District to increase academic achievement at the two schools named above to the highest level of performance in Texas within five years. It provides volunteers in classrooms, facility improvement, parent education, support for skilled teaching specialists, social workers for family assistance, management training, and Saturday school/after-school program assistance.

Jubilee After school Program

The Jubilee Center does not need a clock to know when 3:00 has arrived.  The doors blow open and the children flock indoors for the popular After School Program.  The After school Program provides homework assistance to children, some of whom would not get the help at home. Jubilee also provides the children with rich cultural experience to help them become more aware not only their culture but other cultures. The staff and volunteers of Jubilee provide enrichment activities and field trips to explore and expand the world around them. The children receive a hot meal, sponsored by Kid’s Café of the North Texas Food Bank, every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and a healthy snack on days the meal is not served. Jubilee provides the children with health and nutrition education to help them become aware of the importance of good health. The children participate in many wholesome sports that help them build confidence in themselves. The staff builds a wonderful rapport with the children were the children are able to learn, relax , have fun, trust and be in a safe environment. The After School program is offered Monday through Thursday from 3:00-5:30p.m.

ESL/GED

The Jubilee Family Literacy Project directs a comprehensive approach in developing educational classes for families in the Jubilee Park neighborhood.  Classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Pre-GED/GED, computer literacy and family literacy activities provide a continuum of educational support for the whole family. Jubilee’s Family Literacy Project engages students in learning experiences that are culturally relevant and from real life. Parents can achieve their personal goals in pursuit of furthering their education and in helping their children prepare for success in school.Jubilee is the neighborhood catalyst in education, serving the Southeast Dallas where families can learn English, prepare for obtaining a General Education Diploma (GED ) and receive support for their children to stay in school.

Tutoring

At OM Roberts, Saint Michael’s provides over forty volunteers who serve an average of forty hours per week.  These tutors help 25 classes from 8:20 -11:00 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday.  The volunteers tutor for eight weeks in the fall and start again after the Holidays.  The mission is to help with basic reading skills and reading comprehension.  Often these children live in foreign language speaking homes and are not able to receive help on their daily assignments.

Jubilee Center Summer Programs

The Jubilee Center Summer Program stresses the importance of education. We understand all children can learn when they are nurtured and taught by knowledgeable and caring adults who believe in them and who are committed to sharing with them the joys of learning. In our summer program we realize children must be listened to, treated with respect, and offered opportunities to learn about the joys of reading and their rich culture. Reading is the key that unlocks the door to a child’s potential. The summer program is offered to help accomplish these goals. We also realize parents play a vital role and we will have weekly parent trainings to assist parents on issues of concern. The program is offered during the months of June and July and children participate in reading, math, sports, field trips, arts & crafts and many other fun and enriching activities. College interns are the lead teachers while many Saint Michael’s students volunteer to help make this a wonderful program.
