Education Initiative
 
 
  Education is the critical element in affecting profound and enduring change in the potential of an individual and in a neighborhood.  A comprehensive Education Initiative has been established in the community and is fully underway, at the Jubilee Community Center as well as Davids' Place Head Start Center and local Dallas Independent School District(DISD) Elementary School, O.M. Roberts.  
 
In 2002, Jubilee and DISD formed a Partnership for Educational Excellence to help O.M. Roberts.  One of the oldest and lowest performing schools in DISD, O.M. Roberts had struggled under four Principals in five years.  The quality of teachers was not a high priority.  There was no consistency or continuity in the learning process.  Parental involvement was negligible and there was no volunteer assistance.  Jubilee pledge to support O.M. Roberts with major funding and volunteers.  In turn, DISD agreed to leave the outstanding principal in place for at least five years.  The current principal, Ms. Zulema Ortiz, was hired eight years ago and continues to build and support the relationship between Jubilee and O.M. Roberts.  Due to strong and consistent leadership and capable teachers, O.M. Roberts has made remarkable gains in the past few years, and this 2008-2009 school year received an "Exemplary" ranking by the Texas Education Agency.
 
 
Family Literacy at Jubilee Center
 
 
Pre-GED/GED Classes: These classes provide a comprehensive educational forum for young people who have been unable to succeed in a traditional school setting or for older adults who would like to complete their GED.  Students are encouraged in a nurturing environment and have an opportunity to work one on one with instructors for more specialized assistance.
 
ESL Classes:  Two classes meet twice a week to meet the expanded needs of the community.  Students who participate are each on a different level of proficiency.
 
Computer Literacy:  Students receive instruction on computers from basic to advanced education.  The classes focus on introduction to computers, typing tutorials and Microsoft Office education.
