Exercise & Zumba Classes at Jubilee
(en español)
Jubilee is committed to our community's education, and that means all types of education, not just literacy. We want to teach our children and families about good health, eating nutritiously, how to grow food and how to exercise properly. With a grant from Dallas Women's Foundation, adults attending Zumba and exercise classes will begin to make goals to monitor their weight loss and other health issues.
The U.S. population has seen a dramatic spike in obesity and many obesity-related diseases, including Diabetes, since 1980, especially among minorities and women. According to the American Obesity Association (AOA) “overweight and obesity in the U.S. occur at higher rates[16-26% compared to 12%] in racial / ethnic minority populations such as African American and Hispanic Americans, compared with White Americans. Women and persons of low socioeconomic status within minority populations appear to be particularly affected by overweight and obesity”. The population of the Jubilee Park area is approximately 44% female, of which 65% are Hispanic and 30% are African American. In addition, since 1980 overweight rates have doubled among children and tripled among adolescents. Sixty-one percent of overweight 5-10 years olds already have at least one risk factor for heart disease, and 26% have two or more risk factors. More than 50% of adults do not get the recommended amount of physical activity to provide healthy benefits.
Jubilee offers morning and evening exercise classes Monday thru Friday, lead by a trained instructor, open and free to the community. Cardio activity is the main focus of class. The women are constantly in motion from the time the music starts to when it is turned off. The classes are not restricted to women, but to date, all participants have been and are women. It is a great way for women in the community to work out together and support each other. It is also a great way for mothers to be a positive role model to their daughters and family. On average throughout the year, the morning class sees forty participants, while the night class sees closer to fifty. These classes are able to help an average of ninety women in the community receive a regular amount of physical activity weekly.
Jubilee offers space for exercise teachers to lead class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings(Zumba), 8:30-9:30am as well as Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm.
