Public Health, (Salúd Público)
In following with the mission statement of Jubilee, "to be a catalyst for community renewal and enrichment to the surrounding South Dallas/Fair Park neighborhood, with special emphasis on comprehensive, community revitalization and the education of children and adults, Jubilee created a Public Health Task Force. The Public Health Task Force's objective is to ease the health care shortfalls for the residents of the Jubilee neighborhood by compiling available services and bringing them to the residents in a way that is most convenient for their participation. The Task Force also provides accessible education for improving existing health issues, and most importantly, insures that no member of the community goes hungry.
Public Health Programs:
Exercise Classes: These classes provide a time for community members to exercise, track weight, and attend workshops on health related topics such as diabetes, obesity and nutrition. more info
Community Fairs: A partnership has been formed with hospitals in the Dallas area to provide an annual health fair for the community.
Community Resource Coordinator: In 2004 Jubilee hired a social worker to implement various programs, including directing students and their families to medical and counseling service, coordination parent workshops, assessing essential needs of senior citizens that directly benefit the community of local DISD Elementary School O.M. Roberts as well as the Jubilee community. The social worker also fulfills other varying needs and is a steady trustworthy resource to them.
This past spring, Jubilee hired Rachel Gonzalez as the new Community Resource Coordinator, replacing a lisenced social worker.
Community Garden: Besides the bounty of fresh vegetables, benefits of community gardens are numerous. Gardening can be both a powerful therapy for body and mind. Relief gardens in the Depression were promoted to improve people's spirits and provide work and food. The Jubilee community garden will benefit the community in a variety of ways. It will instill a sense of ownership and provide education and food, while bringing the community together. If the garden yield is plentiful, garden members hope to benefit personally, give to senior citizens, donate a portion of food to a local food bank, and possibly even charge non community garden members a small fee for a basket of fresh food. The garden has been prepared and initial planting began Saturday the 21st of March. We are so excited to watch the garden grow! see pictures
